Partrick Interview

Hello, Here we have the latest interview with Patrick Vigouroux patrick how are you?

Not bad, even though I am on a break now as I broke my big toe during my last surf session. Therefore I am very impatient to be able to get back on my board.

What have you done during 2009? I spent most of the year developping new boards and fins “7th wave” for our new tri-fin programme.

-What is the most important aspect of the FWC for you? In my opinion the FWC represents a real hardcore wave riding contest. On Fuerteventura, riders can find the conditions really suited to their wave riding level. What makes this event so appealling to me is that it is more like a “show” where riders are judged on their style and level of commitment than a “classic contest” where riders perform the same moves over and over again in order to score a maximum of points…

- What is your favorite spot on the north shore? I don’t have a favorite spot. Quite the contrary, I think that what makes the north shore of Fuerte so appealing is the multiplicity of its spots which are strung together for kilometres. Every single spot is special, and thanks to the configuration of the island it is always possible to find a spot that works perfectly in line with the direction of the wind and waves.

- What will you choose to take with you to an island ? One sail/one board ? For someone as light as me (65kg) I would recommend a 4.7, this would be enough to get to the line up and ride even if the wind is light, this should also enable the rider to ride longer if the wind gets stronger. With regard to the board, for the best compromise between flotatability and maneuverability I would go for a 70L, in tri-fin version as it is the most effective board in all conditions: on-shore/side shore, hollow wave, jump etc…and getting back to the line up very quickly.

-Other think you take with you? My surfboard of course ! Even though there is no wind, there is always some waves to surf.

- Anything else you want to share with us ? No ! …based on the size of the swell which hit the island during the FWC last year, I have already written my Will, so I have nothing else to share!! Check patrick in action!

clean ocean project interview

here we have an interview with WIm, from the Clean Ocean Project, one of our sponsors. foto wim

Hello Wim, what have you been doing since the last edition of the FWC?

Beside our classic beach clean ups we have been focusing last year on new events and clever ways to spread our philosophy of giving something back to nature like producing video clips for the fuerteventura biggest tmusicfestival inviting people not to shoot their cigarette ends just on the beach during the festival or anytime they are enjoying the beach...it was fun making the clips with one of the best videoproducers of Spain Tony Mila and local big wave hero Stephane Etienne which helped us out spending some hours in the burning sun for some really good clip...we won´t advise you to litter the beach when he is around. You can see all clips on our blog http://cleanoceanproject.blogspot.com We did some events on the mainland and sell our merchandising in the best surfshop of Tarife WET, we gonna open a new shop on the mainland and we prepare some new stuff for 2010.. Beside our existing shops in Corralejo and Cotillo harbour there is also a new shop in Lajares which include a recycle workshop and the CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT office. We also introduce 100% organic, MATUNAS surfwax in our shops and the distribution in the Canary Islands...we want as many surfers as possible use MATUNAS instead of a classic petroleum based wax. it won´t be more expensive as any other wax so I think its an easy choice as it even last longer, smell betters and the fact Kelly Slater and many others of world best surfers are using it makes it a easy choice. Will be at the shops en March 2010.

Last time we talked you were in the process of creating a non profit organization, how is it going?

Well, finally after 10 years of CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT t we made the step to make an official organization, this is a fact now, to be better organized and to generate more economy to take more action in future. Also its a transparency for anybody who wants to know what we do and how we spend the money we will generate in diferent ways in 2010. We also realize that beach clean ups are useful but we want to go further and take more action. Its a big step as the little money we generate now with our clothing line to grow further and do more stuff to protect oceans, waves and beaches... We want to get people more involved by ´´giving something back´´....that can be as simple as not using plastic bags at the supermarket which is the worst Poisson for the oceans...at the end the bags you use just for a few minutes to take your stuff home end up in the fresh fish you gonna eat at the seaside restaurant...just a simple action as this is a big help if repeated...or take a mug to the bakery instead of each day again a plastic shit cup which end up in your playground...like this there are so many small easy things one can do ´´to give something back``and they just cost nothing and gives you a great feeling...thats our goal with the organization...invite people to do all those small easy things to help out...thats the next step for CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT .

What are your ideas for this year´s event? are you planing to do a "cleaning" of a beach in the north?

I don´t know yet, just as last year I will see what happens and depending the waves on the fuerteventura wave classic and see whats the best thing to do...of course if you help us out cleaning the beach we will do our famous bbq It can be anything but also just a classic beachcleaning if they beaches are messy at that time...

Do you think that the north shore of Fuerte is cleaner than before?

Thats a nice question i love to answer. Yes, its much cleaner than some years ago and its just a huge difference comparing to 10 years ago when i founded the CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT, exactly the north shore of fuerteventura was the reason of creating the CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT as it looked like a huge dumping place full of cars, washing machines...well, the dumping place of the north..we removed tons and tons of rubbish over the years involving local government, not pointing a finger at them but showing them there are beautiful beaches( north shore ) they should take care of for now and the next generations...now days the local government AYT DE LA OLIVA and CABILDO looking after the unspoiled beaches...I think sometimes people get bored of another beach cleaning but i really believe it has got the efect desired...now days you can drive the whole north shore without all that rubbish and enjoy some beautiful unspoiled nature just as it was already hundred of years ago...now, the fact that Fuerteventura has become Reserva de la Biosfera we will transmit the goverment they should take action to be worth this nomination.

Anything else you would like to share with us?

Well, I want to thank the organization of the FUERTEWAVECLASSIC and the riders for their collaboration with the CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT and showing to windsurfers worldwide that we have some juicy waves in fuerteventura and that this island is much more than just a tourist destination. ´´. I wish all riders very very big juicy waves for this year and hat off for the few riders dealing with el puertito last year giving the best windsurfaction ever seen in the history of fuerteventura. Suerte to all riders and organization for the coming event ! Check here some of the photos from last year beach cleaning and BBQ session. cop1 cop2 cop3 cop4
